What to Expect When Expecting

Love has certainly been in the air lately. If I had a dollar for every DM, email, or text to the office starting out with “Sooooo can you get botox when your pregnant, asking for a friend ;-) ,” I would have.. Well.. like $10 dollars in the last three weeks BUT, even though you may be welcoming a little bundle of joy, there are still lots of things we can do to keep your skin healthy and happy.

The number one ask I have before we do anything is to ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS ask your OB for guidance/ clearance for anything that we are doing. If you are asking me for permission, I will ask that your circle back with your OB first. If they defer to me, I’ve got you, but some are more strict than others. Everyone’s pregnancy journey is different and I want to respect that.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about what you CANNOT do. Absolutely NO filler, Sculptra, or threads! My apologies if your lip filler got you in this situation to begin with ;-) but.. Sorry not sorry?! Here is why: although your body is constantly making hyaluronic acid, filler has lidocaine in it which is a no-no, and in the rare event that we have complications with your filler, complication management is very detrimental to the fetus and even while breastfeeding! Murphy’s law will always win. I don’t care that I’ve done your lips for five years, or your cheeks for four, or maybe you have 10 syringes in your face from me that have all settled perfectly, but these complications can range from weeks of antibiotics to even surgery! I do not play when it comes to the health of your baby, so it’s a firm no on all fronts for filler, Sculptra, threads; I’m happy to see you when you have completed breastfeeding.

Speaking of lidocaine, we also cannot do microneedling, as the anesthetics in the numbing cream that I apply to your face is absorbed into the skin, can pass along to little mister or misses, and we cannot have that affecting their little baby hearts. Post delivery you may do microneedling if cleared by OBGYN to ‘pump and dump’.

As far as any of the neurotoxins, it is generally accepted that it is a no. Neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau) are locally injected into the muscle and it does not travel to the systemic circulation (that’s why we have to provide precise injections)! However, while science supports that there is no absorption, all of the brands carry a contraindication of pregnancy or breastfeeding as it cannot be safely tested.

‘Well, Ashley, what CAN I do then?!’ you might be thinking. Well, lots!

As part of the VIP experience or as a separate package, the Celluma LED light is a fantastic way to not only relax for 30 minutes and put your feet up, but the blue and red light therapy IS pregnancy safe on the face, neck, chest. Celluma light therapy is a great tool to help improve hyperpigmentation, stimulate collagen, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and provide a little extra glow. Have the dreaded pregnancy acne? It helps that too, chemical free!

In concert with the LED light or as a solo appointment, I recommend a 30-min, 45-min, or 60-min custom facial which can include a variety of pregnancy safe options, dermaplaning, oxygentation, a jelly mask, and some fruit enzymes, all fully customized for your needs! I will avoid any ingredients that are not good for momma to be and still provide a relaxing yet effective facial.

We can also adjust to make Aquagold pregnancy safe, as well as PRP/PRF (platelet rich fibrinogen), so no, you most certainly do not need to fall apart while pregnant!

Can’t get to the office or have an unplanned bedrest? The PCA Micropeel is a great at-home toolkit to keep your skin smooth, invigorated, and moisturized while providing a few moments of self-care. The ‘peel’ in the kit is actually a papaya enzyme and contains natural fruit enzymes that help rid the outermost layer of skin from debris and dead skin cells. A gentle exfoliation is provided but leaves your skin bright. Maybe even brighter than that pregnancy glow you’re already wearing?! **the included sunscreen is NOT pregnancy safe but can be swapped out for you!* You can also purchase the Celluma LED, aforementioned, through our website and we can ship to you as well; it is the same one, just without the fancy stand. We also have an assortment of Patchology hydrating masks and eye gels for a little’ me’ time at home, or PCA/Aiyana Atelier home masks. Leaving them in the fridge is an extra little treat. If you apply during your morning or nighttime skin regimens, you’ll be oh so surprised at how amazing the skin feels!

Patchology, CellumaPRO, and PCA Micropeel Kits, and products are all available in-studio and online- click here.

Not sure about your skincare? You can always reach out to me to double check your regimen. *This is only available for Aiyana’s current, established patients that I have seen.*

Email us any questions you may have at info@aiyanaatelier.com and CONGRATS! We can’t wait to meet your babe :-)
